Anna Taratiel (Barcelona, 1982)

Her work evokes internal landscapes and presents metaphorical reflections on her surroundings, expressed through geometrical abstraction, provoking emotions and heightening the viewer’s perception through the intense relationship, compositional, conceptual and technical, that she maintains with space and colour. Mental cartographies that take on material life to fight, from visual equivocation, with the ideas of structure, pattern and variation, or with the border between the two and three-dimensional.

Anna first made contact with the art world through graffiti with the artistic name of OVNI. She studied graphic design at the Vapor University in Terrassa and has a diploma in mural techniques from the Llotja de Barcelona. Testimonials

For some years now Anna Taratiel has been a mature artist who focuses most of her energy on studio work. However, art out in the street was her education and it is difficult for it not to come through in her current work. In fact, the particular nature of street work compared with working in a studio could provide the keys for a better understanding of Antípodes. In the early years of her career Taratiel painted with a notably organic graphic language. In the middle of the past decade she moved away from painting and focused on collage, particularly on spatial work with boxes and boards.

The drawings are compositions woven with tapes, paper cut-outs, leftover planes, shadows of color and empty spaces. In each collage the artist recognizes the strength of a small architecture that can grow and be of transformed with a gesture, at times being a shape and a little later being nothing. In this exhibition Anna Taratiel presents works in a small format that arise in a laborious process of transformation and of reuse of the primordial image. Every painting is a figure that places us in the poetics of abstraction and that freely transmits three-dimensional space, infinite and full of life.

Like a film story in which the camera swoops down over a city, lacerating its crystalline structures until they are submerged in a geological microcosm, the paintings and drawings presented by Anna Taratiel maintain skyborne vision points that confuse us in a space that is in urban appearance yet at the same time mineral. In the purest reflection of geometry, her canvases and collages investigate the organic growth of shapes that are capable of expanding without overflowing their own abstract fields. These are not spontaneous gestures: they are organised constructions that deal with cognitive reality. A visual grammar that she reveals behind the serial title of Cristalogramas. The artist processes her works in a multiple and interactive dynamic that brings all mental functions into play, from perception and memory to language, imagination and intuition.
